Lake Management
Presque Isle Lake Association uses a comprehensive management approach in conjunction with the Town of Presque Isle. Planning is guided by the Presque Isle Town Lake Committee (PITLC), which oversees studies, aquatic plant management, and invasive species control across multiple waterbodies within the town’s boundaries. The strategy includes data-driven, adaptive management to protect the water quality, fishery, and shoreline ecosystem.
Aquatic Plant Management Plan
The plan outlines a comprehensive approach to maintaining lake health, preventing invasive species, and supporting recreational and ecological goals. It is based on extensive surveys and data collection, including a 2007 aquatic plant survey that identified thirteen native plant species and found no aquatic invasive plants present at that time.
Presque Isle Lake is characterized by
- extremely clear water
- oligotrophic status (deep, cold water with low algal growth, low plant density and high dissolved oxygen levels from top to bottom)
- a diverse fishery
- management efforts historically focused on fish stocking and shoreline protection ordinances.
The plan emphasizes the importance of native aquatic plants for water quality, habitat, and recreation, and highlights the need for ongoing monitoring and education to prevent the introduction of invasive species.
